money totalling $3,000.

Word of these happenings having been conveyed to
General Li Hon Wan the latter, with a strong force, arrived
on the 16th at Sha U Chung, only to find that Lai and his
men had decamped. Next day, 17th, having been informed that
$ ti 24. Lai and his men were somewhere in the vicinity of La Lan Tau
a place several miles north-west from Sha U Chung - General
Li's forces proceeded there and discovered Lai's men
bivouacked on a hill. A "battle" ensued which lasted till the
18th in the course of which both sides are stated to have
sustained numerous causalities. Victory finally rested with
General Li's force which succeeded in capturing some 30 of
the insurgents and in dispersing the remainder who took to
the hills. As far as can be learned none of insurgent leaders
were among those killed or captured.
